Esau Esau was a man of the field, a hunter who was rough and hairy. His younger twin brother, Jacob, was a plain or simple man. Esau was the firstborn, but Jacob was the favorite of their mother, Rebecca. When Esau was hungry one day, he sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew. Later, when Isaac was old and blind, he gave his blessing to Jacob instead of Esau. Esau was angry and vowed to kill Jacob. But Jacob fled to his uncle Laban, where he worked for many years to earn the hand of Laban's daughter, Rachel. After a long and difficult journey, Jacob finally returned home to Canaan and reunited with his family.

Jacob Jacob, also known as Israel, was the second-born son of Isaac and Rebecca. He was a trickster who tricked his brother Esau out of his birthright and, with his mother's help, deceived his aging father to bless him instead of Esau. Jacob later moved to Egypt with his family and descendants, where he died at the age of 147. He is buried in the Cave of Machpelah. Jacob had twelve sons through four women, his wives, Leah and Rachel, and his concubines, Bilhah and Zilpah. These sons became the heads of their own family groups, later known as the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Jacob also had a daughter named Dinah. According to Genesis, Jacob displayed favoritism among his wives and children, preferring Rachel and her sons, Joseph and Benjamin. This caused tension within the family—culminating in Joseph's older brothers selling him into slavery. Scholars have taken a mixed view as to Jacob's historicity, with archaeology so far producing no evidence for his existence.
