Billy Billy the Puppet is a sinister marionette who appears in the Saw franchise. He was created by John Kramer, also known as the Jigsaw Killer, to communicate with his test subjects. Billy often appears on a television screen or in person to deliver recorded messages that describe the details of the traps and the means by which the test subjects can survive. Before becoming the Jigsaw Killer, John created a puppet similar to Billy to be given as a toy to his unborn child. However, his wife miscarried after being hit in the stomach by a swinging hospital door. John's unresolved anger over the death of his child was likely a primary motive for using a more sinister version of the puppet to convey his instructions to victims of his traps. The traps that John created can be seen as a manifestation of his anger with people who he feels do not appreciate having their life. He believes that these people need to be punished for their lack of appreciation and that the traps are the only way to teach them the value of life. Billy has become a popular figure in popular culture and has been featured in merchandise, as well as references in other media.
