He was diagnosed with terminal cancer and underwent an experimental treatment that left him with superhuman abilities, including regeneration and enhanced physical and mental capabilities. After his transformation, Dead-Pool became a master assassin and joined the X-Men, but eventually struck out on his own as a mercenary for hire.
