He was the son of Joash, from the Abiezrite clan in the tribe of Manasseh, and lived in Ephra (Ophrah). Gideon was a reluctant leader at first, but he eventually agreed to lead the Israelites after receiving a sign from God. He led a troop of 300 "valiant" men to victory against a much larger Midianite army. After the battle, Gideon became a judge in Israel and ruled for forty years. He is remembered as a great military leader and a man of faith.
