Ning Hai Ning Hai is a destroyer of the Imperial Chinese Navy. She was laid down on 20 November 1934 at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, launched on 26 April 1935, and commissioned on 15 August 1937. Ning Hai was assigned to the 1st Destroyer Flotilla of the North China Area Fleet. On 18 September 1937, Ning Hai and her sister ship Ping Hai were attacked by Japanese aircraft during the Battle of Shanghai. Ning Hai was hit by two bombs and sank with the loss of all hands. Ning Hai was posthumously awarded the Order of the Blue Sky and White Sun, the highest military decoration of the Republic of China. She was also designated as a national hero. In 1940, the Japanese salvaged Ning Hai's wreck and raised her. She was renamed "Ning Hai" and commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy. Sendai Sendai is a light cruiser of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was the lead ship of her class, and was named after the city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture. Sendai was laid down at the Maizuru Naval Arsenal on 15 November 1918, and was launched on 21 December 1919. She was completed on 30 September 1921. Sendai was assigned to the 1st Fleet upon completion, and participated in the Great Kanto Earthquake relief efforts in 1923. She was also present at the Battle of Tsushima in 1924. In 1928, Sendai was transferred to the 3rd Fleet, and in 1930 she was assigned to the 2nd Fleet. In 1937, Sendai was deployed to China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. She participated in the Battle of Shanghai in 1937, and the Battle of Nanking in 1938.
